Can we get some "USA's" in the chat???
The CONCACAF Gold Cup is back in action. If you don't know, the Gold Cup is the main association of football competition, compiled of teams from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. The Gold Cup is held every two years, and only three nations to have won the tournament. The Mexico, Canada, and the United States (who are the current champions). Eying to hold onto their title, the USMNT just made a statement against their northern rivals in the quarter final match.
The game itself was sloppy, to say the least. Wild moments, messy play, and all four goals coming after the 87th minute. Brandon Vazquez found a breakthrough and scored on a header in the 88th minute, only to be responded by Canada's center back, Steven Vitoria, on a penalty kick. In extra time, Jacob Shaffelburg (Canada - Nashville SC) blew right past the US's defense and sailed a goal to the right corner of the net in the 108th. Things were looking bleak, until Canada bobbled in an own goal to equalize the match.
The game went into PK's, and the United States won it all in the shootout, 3-2 after Brym's penalty went off the underside of the bar. The man of the evening was Arsenal Goalkeeper, Matt Turner, who became the first USMNT goalkeeper to save multiple shots in a penalty shootout in 21 years. It was also their first penalty kick win since 2005. Are the boys, back??
A lot of mistakes to clean up, but it's a great start into the tournament. Next up is Panama in the semifinal in San Diego on Wednesday.
