Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”
This week’s DMV Star of the Week is D.C. United Goalkeeper Alex Bono.
D.C. United is off to an undefeated start in 2024, winning its opening game and drawing its last two on the road to get to 5 points and move to 6th in the Eastern Conference standings in the early part of the year.
On Sunday, DCU traveled to Cincinnati to take on the defending Eastern Conference regular season champions, walking away with a crucial road point following a 0-0 draw.
The team has goalkeeper Alex Bono to thank for the draw.
The 6’3” 29-year old secured his first clean sheet of the season and made 7 saves in the goalless draw against one of the best teams in MLS.
Coming into the match, in two prior starts, he had made just 5 saves total. The goalkeeper was busy on Sunday afternoon, but kept D.C. United in the game and was crucial in helping the team walk away with a huge point moving toward next week’s game against Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami.
The DMV saw eight teams in action this past week, including the Washington Wizards, Washington Capitals, D.C. United, and the Maryland, Georgetown, George Washington, Howard, and American basketball teams
Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:
Washington Capitals’ Center Dylan Strome had 3 assists in Washington’s 6-0 win over Pittsburgh on Thursday
