DMV Star of the Week - Alex Ovechkin

Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”

This week’s DMV Star of the Week is Washington Capitals Winger Alex Ovechkin

In three of Washington’s four games this past week, Ovechkin scored two goals. First, in Monday’s 5-2 win over Calgary. Next, he scored twice in Wednesday’s 7-3 loss to Toronto. And finally, he netted two goals in Sunday’s 3-0 win over Winnipeg.

The six goal week brings his career total to 847, now just 48 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record.

The Caps are now in the final wildcard spot with 79 points, 6 behind Tampa Bay and just one point ahead of Detroit, which visits Washington on Tuesday night.

With just 12 games left, can Ovechkin stay hot and the Caps hold on to a wildcard spot and make the 2024 playoffs?

The DMV saw five teams in action this past week, including the Washington Wizards, Washington Capitals, D.C. United, Washington Spirit, and the Howard basketball team

Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:

  • Washington Capitals’ Winger Sonny Milano scored 3 goals in Washington’s 7-6 Shootout win over Carolina on Friday night

  • Washington Wizards Forward Deni Avdija scored 22 points while hauling in 13 rebounds and dishing out 5 assists in Saturday’s win over Toronto

  • D.C. United Striker Christian Benteke scored his 4th goal of the season in Saturday’s 2-2 draw @ St. Louis, which is tied for third-most in MLS

  • Washington Spirit Midfielder Croix Bethune scored twice in Saturday’s 2-1 win, including the game-winner in the 95th minute
