DMV Star of the Week - Ashley Hatch

Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”

This week’s DMV Star of the Week Award goes to Washington Spirit Forward Ashley Hatch

The Spirit secured the second win in three games to start the 2025 NWSL season, winning 2-0 on Friday night over Bay FC at Audi Field.

In the game, Spirit Forward Ashley Hatch scored both Washington goals, scoring just three minutes apart, in the 24’ and 27’ minute.

Not only did she score twice in three minutes, but both goals came off of Ashley’s head and into the back right of the net.

The Spirit are now 2-0 in games where Hatch scores, as she scored in the season opening 2-1 win over Houston three weeks ago.

Washington will continue to nurse back to a fully healthy squad and should find its form as they do so; for now, it’s good for Head Coach Jonathan Giraldez to have Hatch at the front of the Spirit attack.

The DMV saw six teams in action this past week, including the Washington Nationals, Washington Wizards, Washington Capitals, D.C. United, Washington Spirit, and the Maryland basketball team.

Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:

  • D.C. United Striker Christian Benteke scored the only D.C. goal in Saturday’s loss to Columbus, bringing his season total to 4 on the year, tied for third-most in MLS.

  • Maryland freshman forward Derik Queen scored 27 points in the Terps season-ending 87-71 loss to #1 Florida in the Sweet 16.

  • Washington Nationals 1B Nathaniel Lowe hit home runs in back-to-back games, hitting a 3-run home run in Saturday’s 11-6 loss and hitting a 2-run home run in Sunday’s 5-1 win over Philadelphia.
