DMV Star of the Week - Austin Seibert

Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”

This week’s DMV Star’s of the Week is Washington Commanders Kicker Austin Seibert

It’s not easy for a kicker to stand out with the top performance in the DMV. However, after the week that the 27-year old journeyman kicker has had, it’s more than deserved.

Following two missed kicks in the season-opening loss against Tampa Bay, the Commanders released Kicker Cade York on Monday. The next day, Seibert was signed as a free agent by the team and was ready to go by Sunday’s home opener against the New York Giants.

In the game, the offense continually stalled late in drives, leading to field goal attempt after field goal attempt by Seibert. In fact, saving the possession where the Commanders took a knee at the end of the first half, Washington’s seven drives each led to a field goal attempt by the new kicker.

And Seibert made all of them. He went 7/7 on field goals in a 21-18 win in which, ironically, the Giants’ kicker got injured, leaving New York in challenging situations on offense and may have otherwise won the game with a healthy kicker for the full 60 minutes.

But it was the newest Commander in Seibert who was hoisted onto his teammates shoulders following the first win of the season. It was just one game, but Washington may have finally found its kicker, with Seibert being the fifth different one on the roster in the past 12 months.

The DMV saw seven teams in action this past week, including the Washington Commanders, Washington Nationals,, D.C. United, Washington Mystics, Washington Spirit, and the Howard and Maryland football teams

Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:

  • Commanders running back Brian Robinson rushed for 133 yards on 17 carries in Sunday’s win over New York

  • Nationals Left Fielder James Wood homered twice in Sunday’s 4-3 win over Miami

  • D.C. United Striker Christian Benteke scored the lone goal in Saturday’s 1-1 draw vs. New York City FC, adding to his league-leading total of 19 MLS goals in 25 games played

  • Maryland Wide Receiver Tai Felton caught 9 passes for 117 yards and a touchdown in Saturday’s 27-13 win over Virginia. His 447 receiving yards in three games is good for 4th in the nation
