DMV Star of the Week - Christian Benteke

Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”

This week’s DMV Star of the Week is D.C. United Striker Christian Benteke

In Saturday night’s win in Atlanta, the D.C. United striker erupted for a hattrick (3 goals) to help D.C. secure a 3-2 victory.

Benteke first scored in the 19’, just three minutes after Atlanta took the initial lead. He followed it up just before halftime with a goal in the 44’.

Three minutes into the second half, Atlanta equalized to make it 2-2 before Benteke scored his third goal in the 55’ to give D.C. the lead for good and to move up to 7th in the MLS Eastern Conference standings.

He has now scored three goals in three of his last 13 MLS games and is tied for 1st in goals scored this year with 11. Real Salt Lake’s Cristian Arango and Inter Miami’s Luis Suarez also each have 11 goals but have done so in 12 games played as opposed to Benteke’s 10 games played.

With one of the best strikers in MLS at the front of the D.C. United attack, the squad will certainly have a chance to stay in the mix for a playoff spot as the season continues.

The DMV saw four teams in action this past week, including the Washington Nationals, D.C. United, Washington Spirit, and the D.C. Defenders
