Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”
This week’s DMV Star of the Week is D.C. United Forward Christian Benteke.
The 33-year old Belgian is tied for second in MLS in goals scored with 16, just one behind Cristian Arango of Real Salt Lake in the Golden Boot race.
This past week, Benteke added two more to his name, scoring twice in Wednesday’s 3-2 win over Minnesota on the road, including the game-winner in the 91st minute of the match, just one minute after D.C. equalized, thanks to an assist from Benteke to Aaron Herrera.
The team has played 25 league games and sits 13th of 15 teams in the MLS Eastern Conference.
It’d likely be much worse without Benteke’s consistent scoring. His 16 goals are second in MLS and 13 more than anyone else on D.C. United, all of which has been accomplished in just 21 games.
With just nine games to go in the MLS campaign, but none until August 24, it’ll be up to Benteke to lead the team into a playoff spot from the depth of the league standings.
The DMV saw four teams in action this past week, including the Washington Nationals, D.C. United, Washington Spirit, and Washington Mystics.
Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:
Washington Nationals Left Fielder James Wood had a great weekend in the series sweep over Cincinnati, driving in 2 runs and scoring a run in Friday’s 8-5 win and following it up with the game-winning three-run home run in the 8th inning of Sunday’s 5-2 win
D.C. United Defender Aaron Herrera scored the game-tying goal in the 90th minute of Wednesday’s 3-2 win over Minnesota, his first goal of the season
Washington Mystics Forward Myisha Hines-Allen recorded a double-double in Tuesday’s loss to Phoenix, scoring 18 points and hauling in 12 rebounds while dishing out 5 assists in the game
