Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”
This week’s DMV Star of the Week is Washington Spirit Midfielder Croix Bethune.
The 23-year old rookie is having a tremendous season for Washington and is a huge reason why the Spirit currently sit third in the NWSL standings.
On the year, Bethune has a league-high 8 assists and has already broken the club record for assists in a season while moving to within 2 assists of tying the league record for most in a season. This is with still 15 regular season games to play.
In Friday night’s win over Seattle, she scored her fourth goal of the season to give Washington a 1-0 lead in the 21’. Her four goals are currently second on the team, only behind Ouleyata Sarr, who Bethune helped get on the scoresheet just 24 minutes later on a beautiful cross by the rookie to the head of Sarr to make it 3-0 at the time.
With the emergence of the star rookie Bethune, paired with the existing stars in attacking roles, the Spirit have catapulted to become one of the most prolific offensive teams in the league.
The DMV saw five teams in action this past week, including the Washington Nationals, D.C. United, Washington Spirit, Washington Mystics, and the D.C. Defenders
Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:
D.C. United Defender Christopher McVey scored his first goal of the season in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Chicago
Washington Nationals second-baseman Luis Garcia had two 3-RBI games this past week, with one in Monday’s win over Minnesota and another in Friday’s win over Seattle
D.C. Defenders QB Jordan Ta’amu threw 2 touchdowns and ran for another in Sunday’s 36-21 win over Memphis
