DMV Star of the Week - Derik Queen

Writer: Zach PenriceZach Penrice

Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”

This week’s DMV Star of the Week Award goes to Derik Queen of the Maryland Terrapins basketball team.

This will be one of the easier Star of the Week awards I’ll ever give out. Queen played the role of hero for Maryland, saving the season with a buzzer-beater shot for the win in Sunday’s 72-71 victory over Colorado State.

As time was expiring, Queen received an inbounds pass and made a running jump shot as time expired, which banked in off the glass at the buzzer to lift Maryland to victory.

In the game, the Terps trailed by as many as 12 points and never led by more than 4, but was still able to get the win and survive and advance to Thursday’s Sweet 16 against #1 Florida.

Queen, the Big 10 Freshman of the Year, finished with 17 points to lead Maryland to go along with 6 rebounds and 2 blocks.

In Friday’s dominant win over Grand Canyon, Queen scored 12 points while hauling in 15 rebounds.

It was a huge weekend for Maryland, who now will play in its first Sweet 16 since 2016.

The DMV saw six teams in action this past week, including the Washington Wizards, Washington Capitals, D.C. United, Washington Spirit, and the Maryland and American basketball teams.

Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:

  • Washington Capitals LW Anthony Beauvillier had a goal and 2 assists in three games this past week, helping lead the Caps to three straight wins and now a league-best 102 points.

  • Maryland freshman Derik Queen had 12 points and 15 rebounds in the Terrapins’ opening round win over Grand Canyon on Friday afternoon.

  • Maryland Forward Julian Reese had 18 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 blocks in Maryland’s 81-49 win over Grand Canyon on Friday, following up the performance with 15 points and 11 rebounds in Sunday’s win over Colorado State.
