Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”
This week’s DMV Star of the Week Award goes to Derik Queen of the Maryland Men’s basketball team.
In two games this past week, the 6’10” freshman Queen had back-to-back double-doubles, putting together terrific performances against both Ohio State and #8 Purdue.
First, in Wednesday’s game vs. Ohio State in College Park, Queen had 17 points on 6-10 shooting to go along with 11 rebounds, and 2 steals in a dominant 83-59 win for the Terrapins.
On Sunday, the tremendous center followed up the performance with an even better one. In a disappointing 83-78 loss to #8 Purdue in West Lafayette, Queen scored 26 points on 11-18 shooting while hauling in 12 rebounds to go along with 2 blocks, 1 steal, and 1 assist.
Queen has now put together four double-double performances this season, topping 20 points on five occasions in ten games.
The Terps are off to an 8-2 start thanks in large-part to Queen and now have a week off for finals week on campus before returning to action on 12/17 vs. Saint Francis PA.
The DMV saw 7 teams in action this past week, including the Washington Wizards, Washington Capitals, and the Georgetown, George Washington, Maryland, Howard, and American basketball teams.
Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:
Washington Wizards guard Jordan Poole scored 39 points and tallied 8 assists in Saturday’s 122-113 win over Denver. The 39 point performance is his second-highest total in a game this season.
Howard Guard Blake Harper scored 23 points and hauled in 10 rebounds in the Bison’s loss on the road against #14 Cincinnati on Sunday.
American basketball Guard Colin Smalls scored 26 points in the Eagles’ comeback 81-71 overtime win over George Washington on Wednesday.
