DMV Star of the Week - Elijah Hawkins

Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”

This week’s DMV Star of the Week is Howard basketball guard Elijah Hawkins.

The 5’11 sophomore from D.C. is having a stellar year for the Bison, averaging 13.3 points per game, nearly 2 steals per contest and 3.7 rebounds per game.

Most impressively, Hawkins is 13th in the nation in assists per game with 5.9 per contest, the best in the MEAC and the top mark in the DMV.

He’s scored in double-figures in 15 of 20 games he’s played in, including a stellar identical stat-line in each of his last two games, scoring 17 points and dishing out 10 assists in wins over North Carolina Central and South Carolina State.

This type of play from Hawkins is a big reason why the Bison are currently tied for first place in the MEAC and are riding a six game winning streak into the month of February.

Look out for Howard as a potential team to represent the DMV in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 31 years.

Of course, it’ll all come down to the MEAC Tournament in Norfolk, VA March 8-11.

The DMV saw seven teams in action this past week, including the Washington Capitals, Washington Wizards, and the Georgetown, George Washington, Maryland, American and Howard basketball teams.

Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:

  • Capitals defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk scored twice in Washington’s 4-3 overtime win over Columbus on Tuesday, netting just his fifth and sixth goals of the season

  • Wizards forward Kristaps Porzingis scored 30+ points in two of three games this past week, dropping 32 in a loss to Portland and 38 in Saturday’s loss to Brooklyn
