Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”
This week’s DMV Star of the Week Award goes to Washington Spirit Striker Gift Monday.
The 23-year old Nigerian was signed by Washington just a month ago and made her first ever start for the Spirit on Saturday night against the defending NWSL Champions, Orlando Pride.
The Spirit got their revenge from last year’s NWSL Championship Game, defeating the Pride in Orlando 1-0 thanks to the lone goal from Monday in the 63’ of the match.
It was Monday’s first ever goal for the club as the win snapped Orlando’s 22-match unbeaten streak at home.
The win lifts Washington to 4-0-1 on the year, with the lone loss coming against Kansas City, which sits atop the NWSL table.
The DMV saw four teams in action this past week, including the Washington Nationals, Washington Capitals, Washington Spirit, and D.C. United.
Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:
Washington Capitals’ Centre Dylan Strome scored 3 goals in Washington’s 3-1 win over the New York Islanders on Tuesday night.
D.C. United Midfielder Joao Peglow scored both goals in DC’s 2-1 win over New York Red Bulls on Saturday night.
Washington Nationals Left Fielder James Wood hit two home runs this past week, including one in a 4 RBI game in the Nats’ 12-11 win over the Rockies on Saturday.
