DMV Star of the Week - Jacob Murrell

Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”

This week’s DMV Star of the Week Award goes to D.C. United Forward Jacob Murrell.

The 20-year old Georgetown grad entered the game in the 61st minute on Saturday night in Chicago, with the game knotted up at 1-1. Nine minutes later, the Fire took a 2-1 lead which was carried deep into stoppage time.

In the 96th minute, Murrell scored one of the best goals you’ll ever see; a bicycle kick to tie the game at 2-2 and earn D.C. United a crucial point in its first road contest of the young MLS season.

It was just his second ever goal for the club and acts a very early candidate for goal of the season in the league.

DCU returns home this Saturday as the Red and Black host Sporting KC.

The DMV saw eight teams in action this past week, including the Washington Wizards, Washington Capitals, D.C. United, and the Georgetown, George Washington, Maryland, Howard, and American basketball teams.

Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:

  • Georgetown Guard Micah Peavy scored 25 points in Wednesday’s loss on the road to UConn.

  • GW Basketball Forward Rafael Castro had back-to-back performances of at least 18 points, including a 22 point/16 rebound performance in Saturday’s 71-60 win over La Salle.
