Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”
This week’s DMV Star of the Week is Maryland guard Jahmir Young.
This is the first time that I was able to be there in person for the performance that earned the DMV Star of the Week award, and what a performance it was.
In a 80-73 win over #24 Ohio State on Sunday, the senior guard from Upper Marlboro, MD had the best game of his career with the Terrapins.
Young scored 30 points against the Buckets on 8/15 shooting, adding 11 rebounds and was 13/15 from the free throw line.
“Especially early in the game, I thought Jahmir, even though he missed some shots, [was] just tenacious after the ball, getting offensive rebounds, getting fouled,” Maryland head coach Kevin Willard said following the win. “His energy and his tenaciousness was really the difference.”
The Terps have had a very up and down season. The team currently is 11-5 with multiple wins over ranked opponents and multiple losses by 25+ points.
Perhaps this huge performance from Young will be the turnaround point for this Maryland team, which is already exceeding expectations in the first year under the direction of Kevin Willard.
The DMV saw eight teams in action this past week, including the Washington Commanders, Washington Capitals, Washington Wizards, and the Georgetown, George Washington, Maryland, American and Howard basketball teams.
Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:
Commanders rookie quarterback Sam Howell made his first career start in Sunday’s 26-6 win over Dallas, throwing for 169 yards and a touchdown while rushing for another score
Capitals center Dylan Strome had 3 assists in Thursday’s 6-2 win over Columbus
Commanders cornerback had an interception return for a touchdown early in Washington’s win over Dallas on Sunday
American basketball forward Matthew Rogers scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in AU’s 73-68 win @ Holy Cross on Thursday. The Eagles are currently atop the Patriot League with a 4-0 conference record
George Washington guard and two-time DMV Star of the Week James Bishop IV scored a total of 51 points across two games for the Colonials this week
