Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”
This week’s DMV Star of the Week Award goes to Washington Commanders Quarterback Jayden Daniels.
For the first time in 19 years, the Washington Commanders have won a playoff game, largely due to the play of rookie QB Jayden Daniels.
The first year quarterback out of LSU was sensational in the 23-20 win over Tampa Bay on Sunday night, completing 24/35 passes for 268 yards and 2 touchdowns to go along with a team-high 36 yards rushing on 13 carries.
Daniels’ favorite targets in the win, Terry McLaurin and Dyami Brown, both had 89 yards receiving and a score.
Perhaps most importantly, the Daniels’ led offense did not turn the ball over in the game, a big reason why Washington found itself in position to win the game in the closing seconds.
Thanks to the leg of kicker Zane Gonzalez (and the right upright on the field goal post), the Commanders secured its first playoff win in 19 years, sending the team off to Detroit next weekend to take on the top-seeded Lions.
The DMV saw eight teams in action this past week, including the Washington Wizards, Washington Capitals, and the Georgetown, George Washington, Maryland, Howard, and American basketball teams.
Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:
Maryland basketball guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie scored 27 points and dished out 4 assists in the Terrapins 79-61 win over #22 UCLA on Friday night.
Georgetown freshman center Thomas Sorber had 11 points, 13 rebounds, 5 blocks, and 3 assists in Tuesday’s loss @ #7 Marquette, following up the performance with 9 points, 10 rebounds, 4 blocks, and 4 assists in Saturday’s loss to #9 UConn.
George Washington guard Trey Autry had 10 points and 10 rebounds in Wednesday’s 75-67 win @ Rhode Island.
American basketball forward Matt Rogers scored 22 points in Wednesday’s loss @ Boston U, following up the performance with 20 points in 22 minutes in Saturday’s comeback win over Bucknell
