Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”
This week’s DMV Star of the Week is Howard basketball guard Jelani Williams.
On the season, Williams is averaging 9 points per game in roughly 25 minutes off the bench for the Bison.
The 6’5 senior from D.C. had likely his best game for Howard on Saturday against Delaware State, recording his first ever double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds in 31 minutes, helping the Bison win 86-85 in overtime.
Williams knocked down the game-winner in overtime for Howard to keep its winning streak alive, hitting a jumper with just 4 seconds remaining to put the Bison up for good and holding on for a huge road win against a feisty opponent.
I usually publish Star of the Week on Monday, but traveling back after the Super Bowl pushed writing to Tuesday, and as of this moment the Bison have won eight games in a row and 12 of 14 while leading the MEAC with five games to go in the regular season.
In covering five area men’s college basketball teams, it’s looking like Maryland is the DMV’s best bet at an NCAA Tournament team. But these Bison are a close contender to the Terps, but will need to win the conference tournament to secure a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 31 years.
The DMV saw seven teams in action this past week, including the Washington Capitals, Washington Wizards, and the Georgetown, George Washington, Maryland, American and Howard basketball teams.
Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:
Wizards forward Deni Avdija and guard Bradley Beal each had a double-double in Wednesday’s 118-104 win over Charlotte. Avdija scored 20 points and added 13 rebounds while Beal scored 17 points and recorded 10 assists
In the win over Charlotte, Washington’s Kristaps Porzingis scored 36 points and grabbed 9 rebounds
Howard basketball forward William Settle scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in Saturday’s 86-85 overtime win over Delaware State
George Washington’s James Bishop and Brendan Adams both scored 30+ points in Wednesday’s 107-105 double-OT win over Richmond. Adams scored 35 points, adding 6 assists while Bishop had a double-double, scoring 33 points and dishing out 10 assists
George Washington had three players record double-doubles in Wednesday’s win over Richmond. Besides Bishop, Ricky Lindo scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds while Maximus Edwards scored 11 and hauled in 16 boards
