DMV Star of the Week - Leicy Santos

Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”

This week’s DMV Star’s of the Week is Washington Spirit Midfielder Leicy Santos

The Spirit won a crucial match over Portland on Saturday afternoon in D.C. to stay in 2nd place in the NWSL standings.

The team fell behind early but stormed back to win. First, it was star player Trinity Rodman who scored the game-tying goal in the 60th minute to make it 1-1 before Leicy Santos swooped in to win it in the 96th minute with the game-winner.

It was just her third game for the club, but already her second goal with Washington, headed in from the top of the box on a beautiful cross from Rodman.

With the win, the Spirit remain in 2nd place in the standings at 13-2-4 and six points behind Orlando in 1st, but three points ahead of Kansas City in 2nd, with seven games to go.

The DMV saw seven teams in action this past week, including the Washington Commanders, Washington Nationals,, D.C. United, Washington Mystics, Washington Spirit, and the Howard and Maryland football teams

Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:
