DMV Star of the Week - Luis Garcia

Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”

This week’s DMV Star of the Week is Washington Nationals Second Baseman Luis Garcia.

Through 29 games played, the 23-year old Garcia is hitting .337 and just had his best week of the season and perhaps as a professional baseball player.

In five games, Garcia went 9-16 at the plate (.563 average) with 2 homeruns, 9 RBI’s, 4 runs scored, and 1 stolen base.

His best performance by far came in Sunday’s 11-8 victory over the Toronto Bluejays. In the win, Garcia went 4-4 with 4 RBI’s, 2 runs scored, 1 homerun, and 1 stolen base, leading Washington back from a 6-1 deficit and tying the game with a base hit in the 6th before the Nats pulled ahead in the 7th and held on for the win.

It’s still very early in the season, but the Nationals are now .500 at 17-17 after being projected to be one of the worst teams in all of baseball, sitting 3rd in the NL East and 7-3 over its last ten games.

The DMV saw four teams in action this past week, including the Washington Nationals, D.C. United, Washington Spirit, and the D.C. Defenders

Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:

  • Five different Washington Nationals pitchers, including starter Trevor Williams, shut out the Texas Rangers in a 1-0 win on Wednesday night.

  • Washington Spirit Forward Brittany Ratcliffe scored twice in Washington’s 4-2 win over Chicago on Wednesday night.

  • D.C. Defenders Receiver Kelvin Harmon had 8 catches for 101 yards and a touchdown in Sunday’s 18-12 win over San Antonio.
