DMV Star of the Week - Makenna Morris

Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”

This week’s DMV Star’s of the Week is Washington Spirit Forward Makenna Morris

The Washington Spirit had a great weekend. First, the team clinched a home quarterfinal playoff game for early November as the Spirit will finish as one of the top four teams in the NWSL, currently sitting in second place.

Then, on Sunday, the team walloped Louisville 4-1 in a game that wasn’t even that close.

In the match, 22-year-old forward Makenna Morris scored two goals, just seven minutes apart in the 36’ and then again in the 43’ to give Washington a 2-0 lead at the half.

Entering the match, she had scored just twice in nine games, putting together her best performance of the season in Sunday’s rousing victory.

Now, there are just two games remaining in the NWSL regular season slate for Washington before they host a playoff game on November 9.

The DMV saw seven teams in action this past week, including the Washington Commanders, Washington Capitals, D.C. United, Washington Spirit, the Howard and Maryland football teams, and the Washington Wizards in preseason

Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:

  • Washington Commanders Quarterback Jayden Daniels threw for 269 yards and 2 touchdowns to go along with 6 carries for 22 rushing yards in Sunday’s 30-23 loss in Baltimore

  • Washington Capitals’ John Carlson and Dylan Strome each had 2 points (1 goal, 1 assist) in the Caps 5-3 loss to New Jersey on Saturday night

  • Washington Commanders Linebacker Dante Fowler had 2 sacks in Sunday’s loss to the Ravens
