Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”
This week’s DMV Star’s of the Week is Washington Commanders Quarterback Marcus Mariota.
On Sunday, the Commanders’ worst fears were realized as rookie QB sensation Jayden Daniels went down with an apparent rib injury.
The good news is that Daniels’ injury does not appear to be long-term. The other good news is that even if it was, Mariota proved on Sunday that he can be a more than serviceable backup option.
The 30-year-old former Heisman Trophy winner at Oregon threw for 205 yards on 18/23 passing and 2 touchdowns in Sunday’s dominant 40-7 win over the Carolina Panthers.
Mariota entered the game when it was 10-0 Commanders late in the first quarter. Before halftime, he had led four drives, three of which resulted in a score, including two touchdowns.
27-0 at the half.
From there, Washington coasted to victory after Mariota led a touchdown drive to open the second half, followed by a field goal. It was 37-0 before Carolina finally got on the board, as the Commanders cruised to victory to stay atop the NFC East at 5-2 and move to 3-0 at home.
The DMV saw seven teams in action this past week, including the Washington Commanders, Washington Capitals, D.C. United, Washington Spirit, the Howard and Maryland football teams, and the Washington Wizards in preseason
Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:
Washington Commanders Linebacker Dante Fowler had an interception return for a touchdown and a sack in Sunday’s win over the Panthers
Washington Capitals Winger Alex Ovechkin has 2 assists, including the 700th of his storied career, in Tuesday’s 4-2 win over Las Vegas
Washington Capitals Winger Tom Wilson had 2 goals and an assist in Saturday’s 6-5 overtime win over New Jersey
Howard football Running Back Jarett Hunter had 15 carries for 102 yards and a touchdown in Saturday’s loss to Tennessee State
