DMV Star of the Week - Matt Rogers

Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”

This week’s DMV Star of the Week Award goes to Matt Rogers of American University Basketball.

AU has won seven straight games and has catapulted to the top of the Patriot League standings with a 14-9 overall record.

This past week, the Eagles knocked off Lafayette on the road and Army at home, thanks in large part to two tremendous performances by senior forward Matt Rogers.

First, in the 75-68 win over Lafayette on Wednesday night, Rogers scored 21 points on 7-10 shooting in just 26 minutes, adding 8 rebounds and 2 assists while shooting 3-5 from three.

Then, in Saturday’s 71-68 win over Army in D.C, Rogers scored 20 points in 20 minutes, shooting 4-6 from three while hauling in 8 rebounds, leading the team in scoring for the 12th time this year, including in five of the seven games during the current win streak.

AU has eight games to play and holds a two game lead at the top of the Patriot League standings, looking to secure a regular season conference title, which would result in home court advantage for the Patriot League Conference Tournament in March.

The DMV saw seven teams in action this past week, including the Washington Wizards, Washington Capitals, and the Georgetown, George Washington, Maryland, Howard, and American basketball teams.

Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:

  • Washington Wizards Forward Kyle Kuzma scored 31 points in Saturday’s win over Minnesota, snapping a 16 game losing streak for Washington with the 105-103 victory.

  • Washington Capitals Defenseman Matt Roy had 3 assists in Saturday’s overtime loss against Winnipeg.

  • Washington Capitals Winger Alex Ovechkin had 1 goal and 2 assists in Thursday’s 5-4 overtime loss in Ottawa.

  • George Washington Forward Rafael Castro had 21 points and 16 rebounds in 32 minutes of action in Wednesday’s 75-66 win over Richmond.

  • Howard Basketball Guard Blake Harper scored 35 points in Saturday’s overtime loss against Hampton.
