Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”
This week’s DMV Star of the Week Award goes to American University Basketball Forward Matt Rogers.
In the biggest game of his life, the Senior Forward came up huge for the American University Eagles, pouring in 25 points on 10-17 shooting to go along with 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and a block and steal in the Patriot League Championship Game against Navy.
The dominant 74-52 win over the Midshipmen vaults the Eagles into the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2014.
AU avenged both regular season losses against Navy and won emphatically in front of a raucous crowd at Bender Arena in D.C. on Wednesday as the Head Coach Duane Simpkins and Matt Rogers will now head to Dayton, OH for a First Four game against fellow 16-seed Mount St. Mary’s.
If the Eagles win its First Four Game, they’ll head to Raleigh, NC to take on the #1 seed Duke Blue Devils.
The DMV saw nine teams in action this past week, including the Washington Wizards, Washington Capitals, D.C. United, Washington Spirit, and the Georgetown, George Washington, Maryland, Howard, and American basketball teams.
Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:
Washington Wizards Center Alex Sarr had 34 points in Washington’s 126-123 win over Denver on Saturday night.
Washington Capitals Winger Aliaksei Protas scored 3 goals in Washington’s 7-4 win over Anaheim on Tuesday night.
D.C. United Goalkeeper Kim Jun-hong kept a clean sheet in D.C. United’s 0-0 draw against Montreal on Saturday night.
Maryland Guard Rodney Rice had 26 points in the Terrapins 88-65 quarterfinal win over Illinois in the Big 10 Tournament.
Maryland Center Derik Queen had 19 points and 10 rebounds in the quarterfinal win over Illinois, and followed it up with 31 points in the 81-80 loss to Michigan in the Big 10 Tournament semifinal.
