DMV Star of the Week - Matthew McCrane

Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”

This week’s DMV Star of the Week is D.C. Defenders Kicker Matthew McCrane.

In Saturday’s wild comeback 29-28 win over the defending XFL Champion Arlington Renegades, McCrane went 3-3 on field goals, including a 54 yard field goal in the first quarter, a 58 yarder in the third quarter, and the game-winning field goal from 49 as time expired to avenge the Defenders championship game loss from last year.

Through three weeks, McCrane now has the most makes without a miss of all kickers across the UFL, going 8-8 so far this season.

The Defenders are now 2-1, thanks in large-part to its kicker.

The DMV saw six teams in action this past week, including the Washington Nationals, Washington Wizards, Washington Capitals, D.C. United, Washington Spirit, and the D.C. Defenders

Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:

  • Washington Nationals Right Fielder Lane Thomas had two 3 RBI games this past week, knocking in 3 runs in Monday’s win over San Francisco and repeating the performance in Sunday’s loss against Oakland

  • Washington Wizards Guard Deni Avdija scored 24 points while hauling in 12 rebounds and dishing out 8 assists in Friday’s 129-127 loss against Chicago

  • D.C. United Striker Christian Benteke netted his 6th goal of the season in Saturday’s loss to Orlando, which is good for second-best in MLS
