Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”
This week’s DMV Star of the Week is Washington Nationals Starting Pitcher Patrick Corbin.
This past week, Corbin had two of his best performances of 2023, recording his first two wins at home as a starting pitcher this season.
On Monday, Corbin faced off against the New York Mets and tossed six innings, allowing 2 runs on 8 eights while walking 1 and striking out 1 batter.
By the time the lefty exited the game, Washington held a commanding 8-2 lead and left Corbin in-line for the win, which he eventually earned.
On Saturday, the 33-year old took the mound once again, this time against the Detroit Tigers. In what turned out to be a 5-2 win for the Nats, Corbin pitched six innings, again allowing 2 runs on 6 hits, 0 walks and recording 3 strikeouts.
Corbin struggled early in the season and had an ERA near 6.00 through the opening month of the season.
However, in his last four starts, he’s dwindled the ERA down to 2.88, which would currently be in the top 20 in all of baseball.
The veteran lefty was presumed to be the ace of the starting rotation entering 2023. At this rate, Corbin may turn out to be exactly that.
The DMV saw four teams in action this past week, including the Washington Nationals, D.C. United, Washington Spirit, and Washington Mystics
Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:
D.C. United Striker Christian Benteke scored his seventh goal of the season in Saturday’s dominant 3-0 win over LA Galaxy. His 7 MLS goals is tied for 7th in the league this season
Washington Nationals DH Joey Meneses went 4-5 with 4 RBI’s in Monday’s 10-3 win over the Mets
