Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”
This week’s DMV Star of the Week is Washington Nationals Pitcher Patrick Corbin.
This is the second time that Corbin has won the DMV Star of the Week Award, and it comes after his best performance of the 2023 season.
Following a loss and a win against Seattle, the Nats took the field for the third and decisive game against the Mariners on Wednesday afternoon.
The lefty Corbin climbed the hill for his 17th start of the season, and it was undoubtedly his best.
In 7 innings of work, Corbin allowed zero runs on five hits while walking zero batters and striking out nine.
It’s the first time all season that the 33-year-old has not allowed a run in an outing, allowing at least two runs in each of his prior 16 starts. It’s also tied for his longest outing of 2023, while his nine strikeouts are a season high and the most he’s recorded in an appearance since June 28, 2022 against Pittsburgh.
Corbin is scheduled to take the mound again on Tuesday’s Fourth of July game against the Cincinnati Reds.
The DMV saw four teams in action this past week, including the Washington Nationals, D.C. United, Washington Spirit, and Washington Mystics
Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:
Washington Nationals Left Fielder Stone Garrett hit a grand slam in Sunday’s 5-4 win over Philadelphia, helping the Nats secure their third straight series win
Washington Mystics Forward Elena Delle Donne scored 56 points across her two games this past week, putting in 25 points in a 109-86 win over Atlanta, followed by a 31 point performance in a 94-89 loss to Atlanta
Washington Nationals Right Fielder Lane Thomas knocked in the game winning runs on a two-RBI double in Tuesday’s 7-4 extra inning victory over Seattle
