Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”
This week’s DMV Star of the Week is Washington Nationals Outfielder Stone Garrett.
The 27-year old Sugar Land, TX native made his MLB debut last August and just had his best ever week as a National.
Garrett recorded multiple RBI’s four games in a row going into last week and finished the past week with a phenomenal six game performance.
Across three games against Boston and three games against Philadelphia, Garrett went 9-23 (.391 avg.) at the plate with 4 doubles, 2 home runs and 7 RBI’s.
Coming into the August 13 game against Oakland, Garrett had multiple RBI’s in a game just four times in 2023. Then, each game from Sunday until Wednesday, he recorded at least two RBI’s.
He’s currently playing the best baseball he’s ever played in the major leagues and is a big reason why the Nationals are just eight games out of a wildcard spot for the postseason.
While it’s still a long shot that the Nats surge for the postseason, the team is proving to be much better, especially in the second half of the season, than many pegged them to be.
In fact, the Nationals are 21-14 since the All Star Break, which is sixth best in all of baseball and third in the National League.
If they stay hot over the final five weeks, it could get very interesting in the NL wildcard race.
The DMV saw five teams in action this past week, including the Washington Nationals, D.C. United, Washington Spirit, Washington Mystics, and Washington Commanders in preseason.
Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:
Washington Spirit Forward Ashley Sanchez scored the Spirit’s lone goal in Saturday’s 1-1 draw vs. Houston, scoring just 40 seconds after subbing into the match after spending the last month with the U.S. National Team at the World Cup
Washington Mystics Guard and last week’s DMV Star of the Week Brittney Sykes scored 30 points in Friday’s 83-79 win over Indiana
