Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”
This week’s DMV Star’s of the Week are Washington Spirit players Trinity Rodman, Casey Krueger, Croix Bethune, and Hal Hershfelt.
The four Spirit players are bringing home gold from Paris after the United States Women’s National Soccer team defeated Brazil 1-0 in Saturday’s Gold Medal match, capping off a trio of 1-0 victories in the knockout stage.
Hershfelt served as an alternate in the squad while Bethune, Krueger, and Rodman all had an opportunity in the first-team squad.
The highlight for the trio was in the quarterfinal when Trinity Rodman scored the eventual winning goal in the 105’ to win the game for the U.S. after extra time.
The Spirit return to action in NWSL play on August 25 against KC Current, first playing a friendly on August 18 against Arsenal at Audi Field.
The DMV saw three teams in action this past week, including the Washington Nationals, D.C. United, and the Washington Commanders in the preseason.
Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:
Washington Commanders Rookie QB Jayden Daniels had a terrific debut in Saturdays’ 20-17 loss to the Jets. In one drive of work, Daniels went 2-3 passing for 45 yards to go along with a 3 yard rushing touchdown.
