Every week, across several sports, players around the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) shine in individual performance. Every Monday, I’d like to take a minute to highlight some of those performances, including what I view as the best performance and name that athlete the “DMV Star of the Week.”
This week’s DMV Star’s of the Week is Georgetown Freshman Center Thomas Sorber.
The Georgetown Hoyas opened up the season this past week with a Wednesday night opener against LeHigh at McDonough Gymnasium on campus before hosting Fairfield on Saturday at Capital One Arena.
In both games, the standout performer was freshman center Thomas Sorber.
The 6’10” 255 lb. freshman out of Trenton, NJ had 20 points against Lehigh to go along with 13 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 3 steals.
He wasn’t super efficient from the field in the game, which he made up for just three days later in the Hoyas 69-57 win over Fairfield, where Sorber converted on nearly 70% of his shot attempts, scoring 25 points while hauling in 9 rebounds and blocking 2 shots in 31 minutes.
It’s very early, and it was undoubtedly against lower competition than the Hoyas will face later down the road, but it’s an extremely impressive start for the highly-touted Sorber in a Georgetown uniform, already averaging over 22 PPG and shooting 55% from the field through two games.
Up next, a crucial home game against Notre Dame at Capital One Arena.
The DMV saw 11 teams in action this past week, including the Washington Commanders, Washington Wizards, Washington Capitals, Washington Spirit, the Howard and Maryland football teams, as well as the Georgetown, George Washington, Maryland, Howard, and American basketball teams.
Here are some honorable mention performances for DMV Star of the Week:
Washington Capitals Center Dylan Strome had 3 assists in Washington’s dominant 8-1 win over St. Louis on Saturday.
Both Connor McMichael and Alex Ovechkin scored two goals in the Capitals’ 8-1 win over the Blues in St. Louis on Saturday.
Washington Spirit Defender Tara McKeown scored the game-tying goal in the 86’ minute of Sunday’s quarterfinal match against Bay FC to send the game into extra time where the Spirit eventually won, setting up a home semifinal match for next weekend.
Maryland basketball guard Rodney Rice put up 28 points in Friday’s 86-52 win over Mt. Saint Mary’s.
Maryland Center Derik Queen put up 22 points and hauled in 20 rebounds in the Terps 79-49 opening night win over Manhattan on Monday.
