The Georgetown Hoyas are back in action for the annual Gavitt Games between the Big East and Big 10 as the Hoyas take on Rutgers on the road.
Ed Cooley’s team heads into the game 1-1, fresh off a disappointing home loss to Holy Cross on Saturday night.
In the 68-67 loss, Georgetown allowed 33 points for the Crusaders point guard, shot just 63% from the free throw line, and was outrebounded 41-31.
They’ll need to be a lot tougher and more physical if they want any kind of success against Rutgers and in the Big East conference.
The good from Georgetown has been tremendous improvement in sharing the basketball and running a competent offense. A year ago, the Hoyas were one of the worst assisting teams in the nation, and through two games they are much-improved.
It’s going to be a great first road test for Cooley’s Hoyas and I see it as a toss-up game. Rutgers isn’t off to the start it wanted either and will be looking to defend its home court against one of the Big East bottom feeders from last season.
Head Coach: Steve Pikiell (8th season, 119-107 record at Rutgers)
Record: 2-1 (0-0, 10th in Big 10)
Last Time Out: Won vs. Bryant 66-57 on 11/12

Rutgers plays its third of seven straight home games to open up the season on Wednesday night as the Scarlet Knights host Georgetown in Piscataway.
Rutgers is 2-1 on the year, losing its opener to Princeton 68-61 and winning its last two over Boston U by 24 and Bryant by 9.
Steve Pikiell is in his 8th season at the helm of the Rugers program, taking the Scarlet Knights to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments in 2021 and 2022. Last year, his team was ranked in the Top 25 during the season, but failed to make the Big Dance, finishing 19-15 overall and 10-10 in the Big 10.
This year, there’s pressure on Pikiell to deliver.
The loss to open the season against Princeton hurt, but that was a Sweet 16 team a season ago.
The Scarlet Knights have plenty of chances to get quality wins before conference play begins, starting with Georgetown Wednesday night and later games against Howard, Illinois, Wake Forest, Seton Hall, and Mississippi State.
Rutgers will present a very good physical test on the Georgetown Hoyas. These two teams like to play a similar style of basketball and the game will provide a good measuring stick for where both clubs are at early in the season.
