Georgetown returns to action Saturday night in DC as the Hoyas host Holy Cross for their second game of the 2023-24 season.

It was a tremendous first showing for Georgetown in the opener on Tuesday night. Ed Cooley’s team had five players finish in double figures, including Supreme Cook and Dontrez Styles, who both finished with double-doubles.

The win over Le Moyne, which was playing its first-ever Division I basketball game, was to be expected. Nonetheless, the 37 point win was Georgetown’s largest margin of victory in six years, and, unlike the past two years, the Hoyas did not struggle in their opening game.

Saturday, Georgetown welcomes in Holy Cross, visiting DC from Worcester, MA.

With the level of competition higher, I’ll be watching to see if the Hoyas can maintain their same rhythm offensively, moving the ball with ease around the perimeter and finding open shots.

Georgetown averaged about 13 assists per game last year and had 23 in the opener against Le Moyne.

The assist number is one to watch closely throughout the year.

On defense, it took Georgetown some time to establish itself physically in the game, despite the Hoyas significant size advantage.

Once the bigs, particularly Supreme Cook, got going, it was lights out from Georgetown. I’d like to see the Hoyas get into the paint more earlier in the game and work inside out rather than the other way around.

I like Georgetown big in this one to move to 2-0 before next week’s first test against Rutgers.

  • Head Coach: Dave Paulsen (1st season, 0-1 record at Holy Cross)

  • Record: 0-1 (0-0, T-2nd in Patriot League)

  • Last Time Out: Lost @ Siena 73-71 on 11/6

  • Player to Watch: Bo Montgomery

Like Georgetown, Holy Cross enters the 2023-24 season with a new head coach as Dave Paulsen takes over the Crusader program following a 10-22 season last year.

Paulsen has tremendous experience, coaching Bucknell for seven seasons and leading the Bison to two NCAA Tournaments and four Patriot League titles.

More recently, he was at George Mason, where he struggled, finishing no better than tied for 4th in his six seasons.

After a year away from the game, Paulsen is back in the Patriot League where he once dominated and is taking control of a Crusader program that hasn’t had a winning record in ten years and has not made the NCAA Tournament since 2016.

In the opener, Holy Cross lost a 73-71 heartbreaker on the road against Siena.

The Crusaders trailed by 10 at the break, and was still behind by 9 with under five minutes to play.

Then, Holy Cross went on a 11-1 run to take the lead with less than a minute to play. Leading 71-70, Siena scored the final three points of the game, including the go-ahead layup with 18 seconds to go.

At the buzzer, DeAndre Williams had a three point shot for the tie fail to go down that would have won Holy Cross the game in dramatic fashion.

A heartbreaking loss on opening night should lead to a motivated team playing on the road against a formidable opponent. We’ll see how Paulsen has his team ready for their second game out.
