The Ed Cooley era has arrived.
Georgetown opens up its 2023-24 season on Tuesday night as the Hoyas host its brand new Division I opponent, Le Moyne, at Capital One Arena in DC.
Cooley comes to Georgetown after spending the last 12 seasons at fellow Big East rival, Providence, where he took the Friars to the NCAA Tournament seven times.
Still, with all the success Cooley had at PC, he struggled in his first season, finishing 15-17 overall.
It’ll likely be a similar season for the Hoyas, with expectations at a much higher level entering next season.
“Our wins won’t come on the scoreboard in Year 1,” Cooley said. “Our wins are going to come in transformational change of students, alumni, faculty, staff, advertising, ticket sales, promotions…We’ve got our work cut out this year. It’s going to be tough. But I think we will improve.”

Let’s take a moment to recognize and congratulate Le Moyne on making the transition from Division II to Division I.
On Tuesday night in DC, the little college from DeWitt, New York will play its first ever Division I men’s college basketball game as the Dolphins take on Georgetown.
At the end of the 2022-23 academic year, Le Moyne began its transition from DII to DI, and now, under the direction of fourth year Head Coach Nate Champion, the Dolphins start off the season with a bang, taking on Ed Cooley’s Georgetown Hoyas.
Last year, the Dolphins went 15-15 in Division II. It could be a tough first campaign for Champion and his team, as the transition to Division I often is.
Nonetheless, don’t expect a team to roll over on Tuesday night. It’s the opportunity of a lifetime for a team that is making history for its school.
