  • Last Time Out: Lost vs. Notre Dame 84-63 on 11/16/24

  • Player to Watch: Thomas Sorber

My first time making the trek to Capital One Arena will be Wednesday night as the Hoyas host Mount St. Mary’s.

It’ll be fresh off another gut-wrenching early season loss for the Hoyas, as Ed Cooley’s team lost by 21 at home to Notre Dame last Saturday.

“I really appreciate our crowd who came out,” Cooley said via X following the 84-63 loss. “Our students, alumni, fans, faculty and staff - I want to thank them for their support. Congrats to Notre Dame - we came up short, but I’m looking forward to Hoya Nation continuing that energy all season.”

Georgetown shot 31% from the field in the game, including 25% (8/32) from deep. Notre Dame, meanwhile, shot nearly 60% from the field and hit 43% of its three’s (9/21). Hard to win a game when that happens.

With the shots not falling, Georgetown fell behind by 15 at the break and trailed by as many as 25 in the second half as Notre Dame continued to pour it on.

Wednesday night, as the Hoyas hope to turn the page, will likely be largely on their own. An 8:30 p.m. weekday tipoff against Mount St. Mary’s coming off a 21 point loss isn’t exactly a recipe for a raucous environment.

Georgetown has five straight games, starting Wednesday, where it’ll likely be the heavy favorite. Following the game against Mount St. Mary’s, the Hoyas will host Saint Francis PA, Wagner, Albany, and UMBC, before traveling to Morgantown to take on West Virginia on December 6.

Over the next five games, I’d like to see the Hoyas work the ball inside significantly more and work inside out offensively.

On the year, Georgetown is shooting 42% from the field, but a lowly 25.7% from beyond the arc, good for 334th in the nation, out of 355 Division I teams.

32 is the number of three point shots the Hoyas attempted against Notre Dame.

I hope, for their sake, they never match or eclipse that mark again this season.

  • Head Coach: Donny Lind (1st season, 3-1 record at Mount St. Mary’s)

  • Record: 3-1 (0-0, T-1st in MAAC)

  • Last Time Out: Won vs. Saint Francis PA 66-58 on 11/16/24

  • Player to Watch: Dallas Hobbs

Mount St. Mary’s sits atop the MAAC as one of three teams in the conference off to a 3-1 start in the 2024-25 season.

The Mountaineers lone loss came on the road against Maryland. Since, the squad has put together back-to-back wins over Bucknell on the road and at home against Saint Francis PA.

Head Coach Donny Lind returns where he was an assistant from 2013-2016, getting his first head-coaching job at the age of 37.

He has the Mountaineers off to a 3-1 start for the first time this century and has a handful of legitimate playmakers that will pose a threat to the Hoyas on Wednesday night.

Dallas Hobbs is the most notable threat. The 6’1 sophomore guard is averaging over 17 points per game already along with almost 2 steals per contest while shooting 44% from three. And you can’t foul him either because he converts on 92% of his free throws (that’s one percentage point higher than Steph Curry’s career free throw mark).

When Lind took the job, he was tasked to return the program to the NCAA Tournament. The Mountaineers were last in the Big Dance in 2021, but have gone 40-55 in the three seasons since.

With his team off to a 3-1 start, the Mountaineers are off and running in 2024-25, playing with house money on Wednesday night against the Hoyas.
