Head Coach: Ed Cooley (2nd season, 12-24 record at Georgetown)
Record: 3-1 (0-0, T-1st in Big East)
Last Time Out: Won vs. Mount St. Mary’s 79-51 on 11/20/24
Player to Watch: Thomas Sorber
Ed Cooley’s Georgetown Hoyas took out Mount St. Mary’s on a windy and rainy Wednesday night in D.C. in front of maybe 1,000 spectators.
The win brings the Hoyas to 3-1 overall this season, with wins over MSM, Lehigh, and Fairfield, to go along with last weekend’s 21 point home loss to Notre Dame.
In Wednesday’s win, Mount St. Mary’s shot 31% from the field and shot 26% (5/19) from three. Georgetown, meanwhile, converted on 50% of its shots, but was once again abysmal from three, making just 30% of its long-range baskets (6/20).
Jayden Epps led the way for the Hoyas with 19 points as four of five starters finished in double figures. Freshman Center Thomas Sorber racked up another double-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 assists in what has been an extremely impressive start to his career.
Through five games, Georgetown remains one of the worst three point shooting teams in the country. As a team, the Hoyas are shooting 26.6% from distance, good for 336th in the nation out of 355 Division I teams.
If you’re an opponent going up against Georgetown, you’ll happily dare the Hoyas to shoot the three ball and take your chances from there. It’ll be up to Ed Cooley and his team to scheme around that and work inside out offensively, something they were a little better at doing on Wednesday night following the abysmal performance against Notre Dame, where Georgetown took 32 three’s, converting on just 8 of them (25%).
If the offense can run through Sorber in the paint and Georgetown works inside out with its guards slashing to the hole and seeking contact, the team could find much more consistent success offensively.
With four games to go before the schedule becomes a night in night out onslaught, the Hoyas will be hard-pressed to find an offensive identity and fast.
Head Coach: Rob Krimmel (13th season, 157-214 record at St. Francis)
Record: 2-4 (0-0, T-1st in NEC)
Last Time Out: Won vs. Penn State Schuylkill 96-57 on 11/20/24
Player to Watch: Jeremy Clayville
The St. Francis PA Red Flash have one of the deepest rosters that Georgetown will see all season.
Nobody on the team averages more than 11 PPG and the roster consists of ten players averaging at least 8 minutes of playing time per game.
Despite the depth that 13th year Head Coach Rob Krimmel boasts, his team has struggled to score throughout the early part of the season. The Red Flash average 66.7 PPG, good for 317th in the nation out of the 355 Division I programs.
The team opened up the year with a 30 point loss to Dayton, followed by a 26 point loss to Clemson. In game three, St. Francis secured its first win in a 65-64 thriller over Campbell on the road before falling at Penn State by 30 the following game.
After a loss to Mount St. Mary’s 66-58, the team Georgetown just took down, St. Francis won its second game of the year, beating Penn State Schuylkill by 39.
Entering Saturday’s game in DC, the Red Flash have had three different players lead the team in scoring, including Jeremy Calyville, Ace Talbert, and the team's leading scorer, Bobby Rosenberger. The trio are the only three to average in double figures for coach Krimmel.
For a team that hasn’t been to the NCAA Tournament since 1991 and a program that hasn’t had a winning record since 2020, it makes Saturday’s game in D.C. a perfect matchup between two teams just trying to rechart a course for better success.
