Hoyas Rout Creighton in Big East Opener

Is Georgetown back?

Head Coach Ed Cooley has led Georgetown to its best week long stretch since the program won the 2021 Big East Tournament under Patrick Ewing.

The Hoyas took out rival Syracuse on the road on Saturday 75-72 before returning home and one-upping the performance with a dominant 81-57 victory over Creighton to open up Big East play in 2024-25.

It’s the first time that Georgetown is 1-0 in the Big East since 2018-19. The win is also the Hoyas’ ninth this year, which matches the total amount of victories from last season.

Coming into Wednesday’s tilt against the Jays, Georgetown was 2-39 against Big East opponents over the past two years, and winless against teams not named DePaul in that span. In fact, the last time the Hoyas beat a non-DePaul conference opponent was Creighton in the 2021 Big East Tournament Championship Game.

Regardless, for the first time in years, there is tangible momentum with the Georgetown program. Ed Cooley clearly has the team moving in the right direction and has a team that has improved tremendously just in the last few weeks.

The most notable part of Wednesday’s emphatic victory was that they did it without starting point guard Malik Mack.

In his place, freshman Caleb Williams started while TCU transfer Micah Peavy ran the offense as the point guard.

Cooley may want to consider having Peavy run the offense a bit more, regardless of Mack’s health; the senior guard went off against Creighton, scoring 20 points on 9-16 shooting to go along with 8 rebounds, 8 assists, and 7 steals, six of which came in the second half.

Along with Peavy, guard Jayden Epps led Georgetown with 21 points on 7-12 shooting, knocking down 5-6 three’s along the way. Defensively, freshman center Thomas Sorber played shutdown defense against 7 '0 stud Ryan Kalkbrenner, holding the First-Team All Big East selection to just 10 points and only 4 points in the paint.

It’s momentum for Georgetown, but it’s also just a couple of wins against a struggling rival and a reeling Creighton team who hasn’t found a new identity since losing one of its leading scorers in Pop Isaacs. From here, it’s all about what Ed Cooley’s bunch can do next.

On Sunday, Georgetown hits the road to take on 5-7 Seton Hall. How will the Hoyas fare when they’re likely favored in a Big East game?
