UConn Huskies remain undefeated as they are now 13-0 and 2-0 in Big East play. They beat Georgetown 84-73 on Tuesday night.
It was a homecoming for former Husky, Akok Akok. He transferred to Georgetown over the offseason as one of the few inner-conference transfers in the Big East. He finished with 10 points and 5 rebounds.
Tristen Newton led the charge for UConn with 17 points and 7 assists. The Huskies shot 49% from the field and made 11 threes. A rare sight for UConn as they were out-rebounded 40-28 by the Hoyas.
Danny Hurley said earlier this week that this is a new season and everyone is 0-0 when it comes to conference play. It certainly felt that way as UConn was down by as many as 7 in the second half with about 12 minutes left to play.
The big story was the bench points. For UConn, they scored 23 points off the bench versus the 8 for Georgetown. They are indeed one of the deepest teams in college basketball. Danny Hurley can have anyone come off the bench and make an impact on the court.
That is exactly what Joey Calcaterra did. Coming off the bench in the second half he scored 14 points off of 54% shooting. He was a big reason, if not THE reason, why UConn won. He was not afraid of the big moments, taking big shots, and not afraid to drive to the lane, and take some contact.
UConn is now one of the few teams to be undefeated at 13-0 and that means 13 straight double-digit wins on the season. They are the second team in Big East history to do this, joining '85-'86 Syracuse. The Huskies will play their next game at home on December 28th vs Villanova at 6:30 pm.
