Met Life: The Giants and Saquon Barkley have failed to come to an agreement on a long-term deal.

There will be no deal between Saquon Barkley and the Giants prior to the deadline. July 17th at 4 p.m. was the date set for franchise-tagged players to reach long-term extensions with their respective teams. After months of conversations, no deal was made, and Barkley now has a decision.

It’s the $10.1 million tag or sit out the season, and it look like Barkley is sitting. Per Adam Schefter, with no long-term deal being reached today, Saquon Barkley is not expected to report to training camp with the rest of his team. The Giants are not expected to see Barkley until later this summer, if then. Barkley will have decisions to make as to when he is willing to report.

The reports are circulating, but supposedly the Giants upped their contract offer from $19.5 million to just over $22 million, sources told Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post. Barkley also reportedly turned down a $13 million offer with $19.5 million in guaranteed cash. The market for running backs is at an all-time low. Is Barkley worth $16 million? Who's to say? But Barkley is more than just a running back, he's the catalyst of this offense.

Saquon returned from injury and proved the doubters wrong. He rushed for a career-high 1,312 yards and 10 touchdowns while adding another 57 receptions for 338 yards through the air. Without Saquon, the Giants don't see the success they had last year, and that's just a fact. Clearly, the Giants were scared for the money in the long term, but in my eyes, a player like this caliber deserves the bag.

As a fan, I am gutted. I understand the narratives here. "Don't pay running backs", "know your worth", everything, but this just seems off. What went wrong?

Like I said, I am all about knowing your worth, but Barkley's agents have misread the whole running back market. Dalvin Cook and Ezekiel Elliot are still free agents, who is going to pay him top dollar? I stand with Joe Schoen, who is trying to set this team up for success in the future. The financials of the Giants are a mess, but clearly he is standing his ground and not tossing out bloated contracts. But from a fan standpoint, it's hard to not be disappointed. I don't know what's next or how they can make this work, but we are going to need a miracle, or it looks like Barkley will be on his way out...
