Alas, nearly two years, and the return of the Y and our favorite characters hit our television screens. It has been 680 days since the last episode of Yellowstone aired. From writers strikes to production, it took way too long for the prestigious show to re-air. However, 142 days ago, Kevin Costner, the main-man of the show announced he would participate in the second half of Season 5.
From reports saying that there was drama between him and the show writer, Taylor Sheridan, to also conflict delay with his work on Horizon, we finally faced reality that John Dutton would not return for the final episodes of the series.
The Walking Dead continued without Rick. Grey's Anatomy continued without Meredith. Succession wrapped up without Logan Roy. It's an unfortunate thought, but it happens. As they say, the show must got on. We knew his character would be written off, and we finally found out how. Let's dive in.
Warning, Spoilers Ahead
Recap of Yellowstone Season 5, Episode 9 - Desire Is All You Need
As mentioned above, we knew Costner would be written off, but we did not know how. I really was hoping it wasn't going to be a death, but it's the "easiest" way to do it. However, I did not expect a "suicide" in the opening minutes. Crushing, I knew there was no way that was the case, and we will find out later on, but damn, I was shocked the first few minutes even though I knew it was coming. Costner is still listed first in the acting credits, is there something we don't know?
It's giving Succession. Logan Roy out, the kids play chess. How will the Dutton family navigate this turmoil.
The acting from Luke Grimes (Kayce) was some of the best thus far. Kelly Reilly (Beth), was also great, the raw emotion and her anger is award-winning. However, it seemed obvious that Jamie was involved in this death, but she jumped on that very quickly.
But then Jamie’s shady phone call sealed the deal. The whisper to Lynelle was weird too. Obviously he is relaying that it was inflicting, but still odd. Also, does this mean Jamie is now the Governor?
The time jump was needed, I never love them in the moment, but it's been so long, and I am glad I watched a recap, but I forgot about the impeachment, how Rip and Crew was already down in Texas, Beth's bar fight, etc.
The volunteer scene, classic Beth. Love it. Also, Rip is still the best character in the show.
Another house for Kayce's family? I can't keep up. Tate got wayyyy too old, the downside to long production times and child actors. Also, another Wolf, oh boy.
We then see Sarah Atwood, and of course she is the mastermind behind the death. I was not expected the sex tape drop, and didn't know Jamie had that dawg in him. But now we know it wasn't suicide and it was a hit. We have our enemy of the season.
It took 37 minutes for Taylor Sheridan's cameo and a mention of the 6666's. I was surprised it took that long. Jimmy is reunited with his old Yellowstone gang, but he has definitely evolved and grown up during this jump. We even get to see Gator too! Not enough Rainwater and Mo in the first episode unfortunately.
Classic Walker dropping poetic and philosophical cowboy monologues.
I truly believe the craftsman that Rip encountered with in Texas wasn't an actor and that was his actual workshop. I liked that scene a lot. Turns out, the closing credits saying RIP Billy Klapper, was in fact the craftsman. He was the local loriner in Pampa, Texas.
"In 30 years from now, nobody’s going to be doing this. Nobody.” Similarly, Rip lamenting the disappearance of cowboys seems like it’s signaling a dark end to the season. It is also a sad reality too after watching this show for so many years.
The separation of the bunkhouse, Lloyd and Chubby not being with Rip, it all is a shame that had to happen. I don't envision them all getting back together anytime soon. All of their dynamics are far too great to not be seen.
It was great seeing all of the characters and where they were, but no funeral or mourning of John was a missed opportunity, because it was too much backstory to not jump right into the plot.
Sarah coming out in lingerie and champagne while Jamie is crying over his dead dad is truly cold-hearted. She is the worst.
The fact that Beth discovered it wasn't suicide is going to lead to an insane blowup when she finds Jamie.
Buckle up, it's about to be a war.
