The Rivalry is back. It's never an easy time playing at Fenway, but selfishly it's easier for me to get to Boston then it is to the Bronx. No matter the standings, you can feel the energy in the old ballpark, and tonight was no exception.
I wholeheartedly believe this was the game of the season. Around the corner from August, a team that was once the hottest and now deserpertaly needed a spark. Redeeming themselves from an opener against the Sox where they had the lead. An absolute battle amongst men occurred in Boston, and the Yankees snuck out with a win and played some gritty baseball.
We witnessed some incredible baseball from our Captain, who went back-to-back with Juan Soto in the first inning, and ended the game with a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate and three RBI's. But outside of that certainty, it was nerve-racking.
Volpe had a crucial error, Stroman didn't have his best stuff, and Soto got thrown out at home on an egregious call in. Tonights game truly tested my faith in the team and in Aaron Boone.
It was the final strike of the ninth, and I sat there shaking my head that Trent Grisham was the man that was sent out to the pasture. But the centerfielder shot a a game-tying double, to keep the game alive. Clay Holmes came in the 9th and then the 10th, and I was anxious as can be, but he was lock down. Gleyber Torres, who at the time was 0-for-5, turned a one run lead to a three run lead, after crushing a double to the wall.
And despite all of the turbulance the past few weeks, the Yankees now have a chip on their shoulder after a win like this. It turns out, guys are starting to perform like we need them too, and reinforcements are on the way.
Giancarlo Stanton and Jasson Dominguez are expected to return in the coming weeks, and prior to the game the Yankees landed Jazz Chisholm's speed and pop to fill out this squad.
First off, what a move. It reminds me of when the Yankees added Rizzo at the lineup. It's a need, not one many expected, and it's a name that sure is worth the juice. Where he plays, I don't know. Is Gleyber gone? I figured his time was going to end after no-extension and impending free agency, but do they trade him for pitching?
Jazz Chisholm isn't a free agent until 2027, so he slides in as the second baseman for the near future, but in this current lineup, the versatility will be needed.
But this can't be the only move Cashman and Company make. DJ LeMahieu isn't the guy he once was, the starting rotation isn't performing consistently, and the bullpen is shaky. Andy Martino of SNY reported that the Yankees are staying "active in trade conversations" and are looking to fill other needs on the team. Can they strike a deal with Tampa to land guys like Pete Fairbanks, Isaac Paredes, or Yandy Diaz? Do they rekindle the Chicago connection and bring back Jameson Taillon and maybe add Cody Bellinger? Do they add on more to the Marlins and acquire Tanner Scott? What about third basemans Luis Rengifo or Matt Champman over on the west coast? For a team with 60+ wins and the two best players in baseball, there are plenty of wholes to fill. The MLB Trade Deadline is set for July 30 at 6 p.m. ET.
Despite the hoorrendous strech of baseball, New York is only one game back in the AL East, thanks to Baltimore also hitting a summer slump. It's right infront of us to take, we just need to execute.
