As a write this blog, the Yankees have avenged themselves after a disastrous loss two nights ago. The dead last White Sox emerged the Yanks, but the Bronx Bombers have bounced back nicely from the blemish. Juan Soto has hit four home runs in two nights, the club won two straight to take sole possession of the AL East, and Aaron Judge made history becoming the fastest player to reach the 300 homer club. A dynamic duo to say the least. Which speaks to the volumes of impact that Judge and Soto bring to this team. The two are leading canidates for the AL MVP. When Judge leads in nearly every major category, Soto is right their beside him. The Yankees haven't seen a combination like this since Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, which was
The priority in 2024 is World Series, but the Yankees have no choice but to think of their second massive priority is retaining Juan Soto. The $500M dollar man (and potentially even more), will have suitors lining up (including the cross-town Mets), but the Yankees cannot let him leave the Bronx. You don't trade for a generational talent and let him walk, and this team would be wasting away the primes of other players without him. That's a conversation I hope not to have, nor think about, especially after the ticket tape down the streets of Manhattan - but we'll revisit come November.
While we are on the topic of generational, it's time to give Aaron Judge his flowers. Barring any interuption, the Captain is set to win his second MVP (we know, it should be his third). The season that Judge is having is monstrous, there is nobody better than him in the sport.
In just 3,431 at bats (compared to Babe Ruth's 3,431), in 955 games (compared to Ralph Kiner's 1,087), Aaron Judge broke history by becoming the fastest player to 300 home runs. At this rate, could we see him break the record? Hard to say, but 500 is very doable. He is one of those players we are just fortunate to witness in our lifetime, and I am thankful he's a New York Yankee.
While Judge and Soto hold down the fort, we are missing the budding star that Austin Wells is becoming. A potential Rookie of the Year, Wells is becoming one of the best offensive catchers in the game.
It's been nice and needed, especially after the loss of newly acquired Jazz Chisholm. He left yesterdays game with an elbow injury. We all feared a UCL tear and Tommy John, but fortunately it's just a sprain. He'll return by September, but we will need everyone to step up. It's unfortunate he fell to injury, especially after the deadline came and went, and the three players acquired are starting to showcase the faults in Cashman's abilities.
Alongside Chisholm, who has been nothing but fantastic and a burst of energy, Leiter Jr has an ERA of 6.14 with the team and De Los Santos was just DFA’d. Sigh. Would've been nice to add another arm and bat? Everyone says we Yankee fans are obnoxious, but I can tell you, nobody has it harder than us.
It's August 15th, and I feel content. However, there's a lot of baseball left. It's an easier schedule, with reinforcments in the bullpen on their way, and Jasson Dominguez waiting in the wings. There's something about this rollercoaster of a seaoson that just feels different, but hopefully it'll be worth the ride.
