The Golf Report: US Open Recap

Wyndham Clark after his win, per Golf Digest

Despite an easy course and lackluster crowd, the 2023 US Open still found plenty of opportunities to excite. From Ricky Fowler to Wydnham Clark, let’s take a look at the biggest moments from this year’s tournament.

Wyndham Clark

Heading into the Open, 29-year old Wyndham Clark had just two professional tournament wins on his resume. However, after recording a stunning 64 in the opening round, then following it up with three straight rounds of nothing higher than 70, Clark adds his name to the ever-growing list of fan favorites in 2023.

Rickie Fowler

Outside the Winner’s Circle, Rickie Fowler’s resurgence was no doubt a top moment not only in this tournament, but in the 2023 season as a whole. Arguably one of the best golfers of the early 2010’s, Fowler’s recent struggles saw him seek help from superstar golf instructor Butch Harmon.

With Harmon’s help, Fowler shot 62 in the first round, good enough to tie Xander Schauffele for an early lead heading into the weekend. Despite shooting a 75 on Sunday, Fowler’s 5th place finish was his best in the US Open since 2017.

LA Country Club

Since the US Open is usually noted for its difficulty, the frequency of sub-70 rounds in this year’s tournament was quite noticeable by fans and golfers alike. Some of the greatest finishes in the history of the tournament were completed with a score just under, or in the case of Shinnecock 2018, just over par. With a good portion of the Top 20 finishing the weekend under par, many were left feeling like this year’s field was not put up to a worthy test.
