Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers hopped on the Pat McAfee Show today to provide some insight on the rumors floating around him, the New York Jets, and potential retirement. Rodgers added that this appearance was not to provide a "decision" in regards to his playing career, but to "clear the air" in response to the whole situation. Shortly after, Rodgers informed the public of his desire to play for the New York Jets this upcoming season, as well as a few other confirmations.
Almost Retirement: Rodgers shared some insight into his 4 night/5 day long darkness retreat, that even he admitted was "too long". In regards to his mindset while he was in his seclusion, he mentioned that he was about "90%" committed to retiring at the time. He went on to say that before the retreat, Green Bay seemed more than willing to meet all his needs to have him retire as a Packer. After his 5 days of darkness, however, he learned from "trusted source" that the Packers had begun shopping him. This appeared to be the final straw for him, and his motivation turned towards coming to New York.
No "List of Demands": On March 14th, it was reported that Rodgers had a "list of demands" which included players he wanted the Jets to sign. The list of players included Allen Lazard, Marcedes Lewis, Randall Cobb, and Odell Beckham Jr. Rodgers disputed those reports on the Pat McAfee Show, however, saying he spoke highly to the Jets brass about those players, not that they were musts. New York did end up signing Lazard to a 4 year, $44 million contract.
Great Meeting with Jets Brass: Rodgers was impressed with the meeting that involved him and Jets ownership and coaching staff. Aaron went on to say that the meeting lasted for about 4 hours. Saleh was also mentioned to have been very intrigued about Rodgers' darkness retreat.
What We're Waiting On: Now that Rodgers has made his intentions clear to the public, everybody is wondering when the deal will finally get down. From Rodgers' interview, it sounds like the Packers are still deciding on the compensation they want from the Jets, which ultimately leaves no timetable for the completion of the deal. Rodgers also stated that it's time for Green Bay to "do the right thing" and let him go.
Jets fans have a right to be incredibly excited at the moment, but shouldn't hold their breath in regards to the deal getting done soon. Figuring out a trade for a talent such as Rodgers won't be easy, but Joe Douglas and crew are up to the task to bring the MVP and Super Bowl champion to gang green and the Meadowlands.
