UConn Huskies: What is going on?

This is the big question all UConn fans are asking themselves right now. What is going on? A Huskies team that started 14-0 is currently sitting at 15-4, losing 4 out of their last 5. I will not be surprised if the Huskies fall out of the Top 10 in this upcoming AP Poll. UConn is now 4-4 in Big East play.

Turnover Trauma

Right now, their big problem is turnovers. In a loss to St. John's on Sunday, UConn had 21 turnovers. In the loss to Marquette and Xavier, they had 16 turnovers. Versus Providence, the Huskies only had 8 turnovers.

It is unacceptable to have this many turnovers in consistent losses. To compete at the highest level and to make a deep run in March, UConn must limit these turnovers. Play clean, crisp basketball. Better passes will set up guys like Sanogo or Jackson to score the ball efficiently.

Jordan Hawkins shot the ball well for Uconn vs St John's with 31 points, but he had 7 turnovers and only two assists. From your star guard, 7 turnovers are not okay. Hawkins needs to stop rushing passes and control his dribble more to limit those turnovers and gain more assists.

Bench Breakdown

What happened to the deepest team in college basketball? The bench has not shown in these last few games. Joey Calcaterra used to be HUGE off the bench for the Huskies. Even stepping up in the big moments to help UConn get wins. This was the team's identity at the start of the year. Role players coming off the bench to make an impact. That is what is supposed to define this team, but if that is gone, then what is it?

Donovan Clingan has also been quiet. He is an underrated big man in college basketball. The one-two punch with him and Adama Sanogo was amazing to start the year. But, Clingan has been getting into foul trouble as of late and his minutes have gone down. This will come in due time, but for his build and height, Clingan will have to learn to keep his hands up to avoid foul trouble. The Huskies need him out on the court.

To answer the question of what is going on, I think it is as simple as inconsistency. This UConn team in Big East play has not been playing consistent basketball like they were in non-conference. They also have to figure out closing out close games. They can not allow teams to go on runs toward the end as they have been. It's a whole new season and they have to turn it around sooner rather than later if they want to be back on top.
