The 2023 NBA All-Star Starters were announced Thursday night and naturally a couple players were snubbed. The player who received the most talk about being snubbed was 76ers center, Joel Embiid.
The thing about "snubs" is that when you say Joel Embiid should have been a starter, you have to name the place he should replace. I guess in this position, Embiid could have replaced Giannis. Media and players agreed that Embiid deserved the spot as he was third in the front-court voting behind Tatum and Durant. However, he was fourth in the fan vote and Giannis was first. That was the difference.
I understand the fan vote in terms of that fans are the lifeblood of the league and they should get to see who they want in the game. They are paying money for tickets, etc and should have a choice in who they want to see. However, I don't really understand why they chose Giannis over Embiid. If you're going on pure likability I guess Giannis might have a slight edge, but the numbers do not lie. Embiid scores more than Giannis with a far better true-shooting percentage.
Don't get me wrong, Giannis is an incredible player. However this season he hasn't looked nearly as good. His offense has looked average with his mid range shooting numbers way down.
NBA Twitter had some thoughts on the Embiid snub as well:
It seems like the consensus was pretty shocked that he wasn't named a starter. However, a lot of people were also celebrating. It kinda makes sense when you look at the fan vote vs the players vote.
Some other All-Star snubs:
Anthony Davis
Domantas Sabonis
Tyrese Haliburton
Can you think of anyone else?
