From a 3rd place CY-Young and All-Star season to pitching against rookies, life comes at you QUICK. The once prominent Blue Jays pitcher is now looking to find his stuff back in the Florida Complex League.
All I have to say is "wow". Alek Manoah's fall from grace entertaining to watch, but this is absolutely brutal to see. The Blue Jays saw enough of the struggler starting last night, after getting pulled just nine batters in, after allowing six runs.
Last season, Manoah went 16–7 with a 2.24 ERA in 1962⁄3 innings while striking out 180 batters. This season, the results have been abysmal. The real turning point was when he called Gerrit Cole a cheater. In that stretch of games since the ridiculous comments, Manoah boasted a 1-7 record in 58 innings pitched. He's posted a 6.36 ERA, with 48 strikeouts and 11 homers allowed. And for Gerrit Cole since Alek Manoah called him a cheater?
7-0 record
79.2 IP
2.82 ERA
84 strikeouts
8 homers allowed
Who's laughing now?
The Blue Jays were bound to pull the plug eventually, but I think what is crazy about the whole situation is the fact that they didn't put him on a phantom IL stint or get some reps in Triple A. Instead, Toronto banished him to the Florida Complex League, which quite literally is where the youth of the sport are playing.
Instead of shit talking the Yankees, maybe Manoah should have worried about his own craft. Good luck in Rookie Ball, big man!
