Cashman is on a heater today! Once Luis Castillo was on the move to the Mariners, the Yankees needed to make a move for a starter. The name that was on the top of many contenders list was Oakland Athletic, Frankie Montas. The Yankees swooped in and got their guy.
In 19 starts this season, he's compiled a 3.18 ERA (117 ERA+) and a 3.89 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He's currently holding a 1.6 WAR, per Baseball-Reference's calculations.
The Yankees sent of four Top 25 prospects to Oakland. JP Sears (No.20), Ken Waldichuk (No.5), 2B Cooper Bowman (No.21), and Luis Medina (No.10). Sears is the only who is has seen the big leagues. Posting a 2.05 ERA in 22 innings, with 15 strikeouts. A solid piece, but not a player like Montas yet.
No more prospect hugging. Cashman about to splurge??? A name that isn't on the list is Oswald Peraza, who's batting .325 in AAA. He was expected to be part of the haul, and is currently the Yankees No.2 prospect. They might as well call him up, because he is ready to be that dude and bump IKF out of here.
But back to the present. Not only do the Yanks add Montas, they also get additional bullpen depth with Lou Trivino. A career 4.04 ERA righty, who Matt Blake can tune up.
With the addition of Frankie, here's what the starting rotation looks like. Adios Domingo!
Gerrit Cole (3.30 ERA)
Nestor Cortes (2.53 ERA)
Frankie Montas (3.18 ERA)
Jameson Taillon (3.72 ERA)
Jordan Montgomery (3.69 ERA)
Luis Severino (3.45 ERA) - Injured at the moment
